24/7 Electrician: The Most Common Electrical Emergencies in Perth Homes in 2026

Electrical problems rarely happen at a convenient time. A power trip can happen during dinner, a burning smell can appear late at night, or a faulty outlet can suddenly start sparking.

That’s when knowing when to call a 24/7 Electrician can make a real difference.

For Perth homeowners, electrical emergencies can range from simple power faults to problems that create serious fire or shock risks. Knowing the warning signs helps you act quickly without putting yourself or your family in danger.

In 2026, electrical safety remains a strong focus in Western Australia. Building and Energy continues to encourage homeowners to test their RCD safety switches regularly. The regulator describes RCDs as one of the most effective measures for preventing electrocution, serious electrical injury and electrical fires.

So, what electrical emergencies should you watch for around your home?

1. Your safety switch keeps tripping

A safety switch or RCD that repeatedly trips shouldn't simply be reset again and again.

An RCD monitors electrical current and disconnects the supply when it detects a dangerous change. That can happen because of a faulty appliance, damaged wiring, or another electrical fault.

WA's current guidance recommends regularly testing RCDs. If an RCD doesn't switch off immediately during a test, or won't stay on after resetting, you should contact a licensed electrical contractor.

If your safety switch keeps tripping without an obvious cause, a 24/7 Electrician can investigate the fault safely.

Hiddlestone Electrics provides RCD and safety-switch installations, along with switchboard upgrades for residential and commercial properties.

2. Burning smells from outlets or appliances

A burning smell near a power point is something you shouldn't ignore.

Heat can indicate an overloaded circuit, damaged wiring, a faulty connection, or an electrical component beginning to fail. You might also notice discolouration around the outlet or a warm power point.

Don't keep using the affected outlet to see if the smell disappears.

If you're concerned about an immediate electrical hazard, switch off power only if you can do so safely. Keep away from damaged equipment and contact a 24/7 Electrician for professional assistance.

Hiddlestone's compliance guidance also identifies burning smells near outlets, frequent breaker trips, and older electrical components as signs that a property may need attention.

3. Sparks, buzzing or crackling sounds

Electrical outlets shouldn't spark during normal use.

A brief spark can occasionally occur when connecting certain appliances. However, repeated sparks, crackling sounds, buzzing or visible damage deserve professional attention.

These signs can point to loose connections, damaged wiring, faulty switches, or other electrical problems.

Don't remove the outlet cover or attempt to repair the wiring yourself. In Western Australia, electrical work must be performed by appropriately licensed people under the Electricity (Licensing) Regulations 1991. The state's licensing guidance was updated on 4 August 2026.

When you're unsure about the source of a fault, a 24/7 Electrician can assess the problem and determine what needs attention.

4. Sudden or unexplained power loss

Not every blackout requires an electrician.

Sometimes the problem comes from the electricity network rather than your property. If neighbouring homes have also lost power, check your electricity provider or network operator for outage information.

If power has only disappeared from part of your home, however, the situation may be different. A tripped breaker, RCD activation, overloaded circuit, or internal electrical fault could be responsible.

This distinction matters because repeatedly resetting a switch won't fix an underlying fault.

A 24/7 Electrician can help identify whether the problem appears to be inside your property's electrical system and advise you on the appropriate next step.

5. Electrical problems in older Perth homes

Older homes can have electrical systems that weren't designed around today's appliances and power demands.

Frequent circuit trips, flickering lights, old ceramic fuses, missing safety switches and burning smells can all warrant an inspection.

This doesn't mean every older home has unsafe wiring. It means the electrical installation deserves proper assessment when warning signs appear.

Hiddlestone Electrics has operated in Western Australia since 1920 and provides electrical services for residential, commercial and industrial properties. Its compliance services include electrical inspections, switchboard upgrades, rewiring and fault detection.

For older properties, calling a 24/7 Electrician can help you address an urgent fault before it develops into a larger safety problem.

6. Smoke alarms and electrical safety

Smoke alarms don't replace safe electrical systems, but they form an important part of household fire protection.

Hiddlestone Electrics provides smoke alarm installations as part of its electrical services. The company also carries out LED upgrades and other electrical work.

If an electrical fault has caused smoke, heat or a fire, your first priority should always be getting people to safety and contacting emergency services where necessary.

Don't attempt to investigate a fire-damaged electrical system yourself.

Once the immediate danger has passed, a licensed 24/7 Electrician can assess electrical damage and identify what repairs or safety work may be required.

Electrical emergencies across Perth's western suburbs

Electrical faults don't follow suburb boundaries.

Hiddlestone Electrics serves customers across Daglish, Floreat, Highgate, Leederville, Maylands and Mount Claremont, as well as Mount Lawley, Perth, Shenton Park, Subiaco, Wembley and West Perth.

That broad service area means homeowners can seek professional electrical assistance across a wide part of Perth when urgent problems arise.

Whether you're in Daglish, Floreat, Highgate, Leederville, Maylands, Mount Claremont, Mount Lawley, Perth, Shenton Park, Subiaco, Wembley or West Perth, the same basic rule applies: don't take unnecessary risks with electrical faults.

What should you do during an electrical emergency?

First, focus on keeping everyone safe.

If there is smoke or fire, leave the property and contact emergency services. Don't touch damaged electrical equipment or attempt repairs while power may still be present.

For a suspected electrical fault, avoid repeatedly resetting breakers or RCDs when the problem keeps returning.

Don't open outlets, remove switchboard components, or attempt wiring repairs yourself. WA Government guidance confirms that electrical work must be carried out by licensed professionals.

You should also know what paperwork to expect after applicable electrical installation work. In WA, electrical contractors generally need to provide an Electrical Safety Certificate within 28 days, subject to the relevant exemptions.

The state's eNotice system also supports electronic lodgement of electrical notices and safety certificates. This guidance was updated in July 2026.

These details matter because professional electrical work isn't only about fixing the immediate problem. It should also leave you with a safe, compliant installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I call a 24/7 Electrician?

Call a 24/7 Electrician when you have an urgent electrical fault that could create a risk of shock, fire or further damage. Examples include burning smells, sparks, exposed wiring, repeated RCD trips and unexplained electrical faults.

Is a tripping RCD an electrical emergency?

Not every RCD trip is an emergency, but repeated trips shouldn't be ignored. An RCD can activate because of a faulty appliance or an electrical fault. If it repeatedly trips or won't reset correctly, contact a licensed electrician.

Can I repair an electrical fault myself?

You shouldn't carry out electrical installation work yourself. WA requires electrical work to be performed by appropriately licensed people, and the government warns about the risks associated with unlicensed electrical work.

Do older Perth homes need electrical inspections?

Not automatically. However, warning signs such as flickering lights, old ceramic fuses, frequent breaker trips, burning smells, or a lack of safety switches can justify professional inspection.

Does Hiddlestone Electrics provide emergency electrical services?

Yes. Hiddlestone Electrics provides 24/7 emergency electrician services alongside switchboard upgrades, RCD and safety-switch installations, smoke alarm installations and other electrical services.
